Encouragement for your walk with God

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

-Matthew 13:44

What Is Your Treasure?

What is your treasure?  In other words, what do you love and value the most?  In Matthew 6:19, Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Our treasure is what we love the most and usually what we think about more than all other things.  It can be a physical object, a person, fame and attention, other people’s opinions, or even sinful deeds.  Basically our treasure is what we value and love.  So, what should our treasure be according to God’s Word?

I think it can be summed up in the greatest commandment:  “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment'” (Matthew 22:37-38).  Our treasure should be the Lord according to Jesus.  And our thoughts should be on his plans and will.  Afterall, Jesus is the prize we are to seek and find!

God’s Treasure

So if our treasure is the Lord, then what is God’s treasure?

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

Matthew 13:44 can be looked at from two different angles.  The first way is that our treasure is God’s kingdom (the Lord) and his kingdom is worth selling everything we have in order to obtain it.  Jesus even said we are to, “Seek first his kingdom and righteousness…” (Matthew 6:33).  The kingdom of heaven is here and now on earth, in us, by the power of the Holy Spirit.  And it will also be in the future, when the new Jerusalem and new heaven are established.  Jesus is emphasizing the value of the kingdom of heaven and that it’s totally worth giving up our lives to follow Jesus and his kingdom.  However, there is a second meaning hidden within this short verse.  I never understood it until a pastor friend explained it several years ago.  Here is the explanation:

The man who sold everything to buy the field is Jesus, while the field represents the world.  The treasure in the field is us, his followers.  We are the hidden treasure that is being revealed in the world!  We are his sons and daughters that are both valuable and precious.  Through Jesus’ sacrifice (John 3:16) he sold everything.  And by the shedding of his blood, Jesus bought the field and paid the price so we (his treasure) could be redeemed!

May we always remember that the Lord is our treasure and we are his!  Hallelujah!

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

-Hebrews 12:2
