Encouragement for your walk with God

“For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb; I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” -Psalm 139:13-14

 Knit Me Together

I’ve never knitted anything before, but I do know it takes time and patience.  The process can be tedious and depending how detailed the project, it can take a lot of time, especially if knitting a blanket or toboggan.  However, in the end, the process is worth the product.  Having something hand-made is very special.  Some of the greatest gifts are the ones made with careful planning and hardwork.  So how does all of this relate to God?  Well, according to Psalm 139:13, God not only created our inmost being, but also knit us together in our mother’s womb.

Verse 15 says, “My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.  When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.”  Unformed body in the Hebrew (golem) literally means embryo.  Wow!  God saw our beginning as an embryo and like someone who crochets, carefully and meticulously knit us together.  His hand was involved with the process of our creation and he knows us intimately beyond our comprehension.  By faith we can believe he was there in the beginning and he’s even with us now.  We were created in his image and therefore “fearfully and wonderfully made!” (Psalm 139:14).

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

What does it mean to be fearfully and wonderfully made?  Fearfully, in this case, is not negative, but positive.  It’s from the Hebrew word, yare, which means with reverence and awe.  Wonderfully is palah in Hebrew, which means set apart and distinct.  How incredible that God set us apart by making us distinct among all his creation, in which we reflect the reverence and awe of our Creator!

Colossians 1:16-17 says, “For by him (Jesus) all things were created:  things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…all things were created by him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”  God created us, knit us together and even holds our bodies together – we are not mistakes but living miracles!  God had a hand in our existence from the very beginning when we were conceived and our DNA reflects Christ and the glory of God.  All praise be unto Him!
