The True Light

Sometimes in this world, it feels like we are surrounded by evil and darkness. We might wonder, where is God? Or, why is this world becoming darker? The darkness seems to be increasing, because of all of the evil things we hear and see around us. However, according to God’s Word, the darkness is not overcoming the light. Rather, it is the light Overcoming The Darkness. 

“Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining” (1 John 2:8). 

The darkness is passing and the light is shining brighter than ever. In fact, the light has always been bright, but now, as the world comes closer and closer to an end, the true light is exposing even more darkness than before. The true light is shining bright and the darkness is being exposed for the lies, sin, and death it brings.

“But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible…” (Ephesians 5:13).

Glory

When I began to paint Overcoming the Darkness, I had a picture of a black and white space separated and three red stripes on top of the black. I knew the black represented our sinful world, the white was the Kingdom of Heaven, and the red stripes were the marks Jesus endured on the cross. For Jesus came from the Father into our dark world and left his mark. He pierced the darkness with his light. And with his pure blood that was shed on the cross, He made the way for us to come into the Kingdom of Heaven and into the true light.

After painting the black and white space, I felt God leading me to paint the light overtaking the darkness. Although it seems that the darkness is sometimes overcoming the light in our world, God through His Son Jesus, is actually overcoming the darkness; it’s passing away! The truth of the gospel is much stronger than any lie in this world. The darkness has no chance against the truth and the true light of Jesus Christ. For God’s Kingdom is advancing, expanding, and growing everyday (just like in the parables of the yeast and mustard seed from Matthew 13:31-33). People are being saved, healed, and delivered as God’s light spreads throughout our world. Jesus has broken chains and brought true freedom to so many through his sacrifice on the cross.

“He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains” (Psalm 107:14).    

The Jewish nation, long ago, lived in sin and rebellion.  “Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, prisoners suffering iron chains, for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High” (Psalm 107:10-11).  These Babylonian prisoners cried out to the Lord for help and because of God’s faithfulness and love, he saved them from the darkness and broke their chains.  He delivered them from their enemies and forgave their sin.

Today, God is the same.  He is overcoming the darkness; he is breaking our chains and forgiving our sin.  For God is much stronger than the darkness because he is the light.  The darkness is being exposed and covered up by the true light of Jesus as His Kingdom comes and His will is done on earth as it is in Heaven.  

May your Kingdom come Lord and may your light continue to spread until one day the earth is full of your glory!
